Making it Monday: Microscopic Art

I didn’t make anything today but I was reading about Willard Wigan and his unbelievable tiny sculptures.  He began when he was only 5 using bits of wood and glass.  He uses a hair from the back of a fly as a paint brush.  Other interesting materials Willard uses include dust particles, spider webs and sugar crystals.

In order to concentrate on his creations, he has to slow down his pulse so that his fingers don’t shake and interfere with the process.

This is an extreme example of how someone overcompensates when they have trouble in another area. Willard couldn’t read or write and admits he felt small so he found power in his tiny needle eye masterpieces.

You actually need a microscope to see the detailed sculptures. Teachers made him feel like nothing. “I’m trying to prove to the world that nothing doesn’t exist, “  says Willard.

Here’s a clip from ABC news on Wigan’s sculptures done in the eye of a needle. Shown is a miniature elephant sculpture worth $300,000 that started out as a grain of sand and a dust particle. He sold the rest to a collector for $20 million!
